INSCRIPTION WORDING |
||
|
One of the most important things to consider when purchasing a headstone is the wording you choose to inscribe on the monument. Bearing in mind the numerous emotions involved when considering these things, we have listed here some typical guidelines to assist with this often difficult task. 1. Number of names This is a key consideration since it may determine the size of headstone you need. Apart from the deceased who else could possibly be buried in the same grave in later years? Will there be room for those additional names using the same size lettering and word format? 2. Opening remembrance message Popular choices include; "In Loving Memory of" "Precious Memories of" "Pray for the souls of" "I ndil cuimhne ar" 3. Name & general layout Some examples are as follows: a) "John O'Donnell, Dungloe, died January 1st 1980, aged 92 years" Above is a typical layout mentioning the persons name, address, date deceased and age. b) "John O'Donnell, 1888 - 1980" If less detail is preferred simply stating the name, year of birth and year of death may be recommended. c) "John, died January 1st 1980 aged 92 years" If the family surname is mentioned on the base of the headstone it may be left off the main headstone inscription. Alternatively some prefer the first name in its full version. Subsequent family members may be referred to only by their first name. 4. R. I. P. Most headstones have this inscribed at the bottom of the main lettering area on the monument. Other wording options include: "Rest in peace" "Requiescant in Pace" "Suaimhneas Siorrai" 4. Epitaph This can be anything that invokes the memory or spirit of the individual or those who are paying tribute. It may be a simple thought, a prayer, a favourite quote... the list is endless. Some examples include: "Forever in our thoughts" "till we meet again" "be not afraid.." 5. Base inscription The base of the headstone is generally chosen as the preferred place to list the family surname. However it can also be a place to add a special design or epitaph if preferred.
